The "Kan-tsubaki" (Camellia hiemalis) belongs to Teaceae (the Tea family). It is a small evergreenl tree that is endemic to Japan. It is occasionally divided into a cultivar of Camellia sasanqua. This tree can reach 1.5-3 m in height, and now cultivated all over the world in landscapes. Leaves are oblong, dark green with acute toothed edges. From November to February, scented flowers are seen. Usually flowers are pale rose-red double-flowered, otherwise flowers are red, white or pink single blossoms. Tall-types of this tree are called "Tachi-kan-tsubaki" or "Shishi-gashira".
