中国の南部が原産です。わが国へは江戸時代の中頃に渡来しました。高さは４〜５メートルほどになります。葉は長楕円形で互生し、全縁です。５月から６月ごろ、葉腋に黄白色の花を咲かせます。花披片には紅色の縁取りがあります。また「バナナ」に似た強い芳香があります。別名で「とうおがたま（唐招霊）」とも呼ばれます。中国語では「含笑花（han xiao hua）」と呼ばれます。

モクレン科オガタマノキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Michelia figo。英名は Banana shrub。

The Banana shrub (Michelia figo) belongs to Magnoliaceae (the Magnolia family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to southern China. This tree was introduced into Japan in the middle of Edo Era (1603-1868). It can reach 4-5 m in height. The leaves are oblong, alternate and entire. The yelowish white flowers come in the axiles from May to June. The tepals have rose-pink edges. The flowers have banana-like strong odor. In Chinese, it is called "含笑花" (han xiao hua).
