The Attu holly fern (Polystichum microchlamys) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is a summer-green fern that is distributed from the Chubu region northward to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as on the Kamchatka Peninsula and in Alaska. It grows in subalpine to alpine zones along forest edges and on slightly moist forest floors, reaching heights of 60 to 120 cm. The leaves grow obliquely upward in dense clusters. The leaf blades are oblong-lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, twice pinnately shallowly or deeply lobed. The pinnae are 3-13 cm long, with the middle ones being the largest; the lower pinnae are characteristically reduced. The lobes are ovate, acutely pointed, and shallowly to deeply lobed. The sori are located near the midrib of the pinnae.
