わが国の本州から四国・九州に分布しています。山地の草原に生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は線形から狭披針形で、「すすき」よりも薄くて柔らかです。また葉には、疎らに長軟毛があります。８月から９月ごろ、花茎の先に２〜５個の花序の枝をだして小穂をつけます。小穂の長い芒があるのが特徴です。

イネ科ススキ属の多年草で、学名は Miscanthus oligostachyus。英名はありません。

The "Kariyasu-modoki" (Miscanthus oligostachyus) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This grass grows in mountane grasslands, and it can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are linear to narrow lanceolate, thinner and softer than the Silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis). They bear long soft hairs sparsely. The many spikelets are borne in 2-5 cluster-branches which arranged atop of flowering stalks from August to September. It is defined that its spikelet has long arista.
