中国が原産です。わが国へは薬用植物として渡来し、現在では広く各地で植栽されています。高さは８メートルくらいになり、樹皮は緑褐色で鱗片状にはがれます。葉は倒卵形から楕円形で鋸歯があり、互生します。４月から５月ごろ、枝先に淡い紅色の花を咲かせます。果実は長円形か倒卵形で、黄色く熟します。芳香があり、果実酒や砂糖漬けに利用されます。中国語では「木瓜（mu gua）」と呼ばれます。写真中４・中５の品種は「伊那かりん」。 |

バラ科ボケ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Chaenomeles sinensis。英名は Chinese quince。 |

The Chinese quince (Chaenomeles sinensis) belonts to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to China. This tree was introduced into Japan as a medicated plant and cultivated in so many places nowadays. It can reach about 8 m in height and its barks are greenish-brown, furrowed into large scaly ridges. The leaves are obovate to elliptic and alternate with toothed edges. The pale rose-pink flowers come on the terminal branches from April to May. The fruits are oval or obovate and ripen in yellow. They are aromatic and used for fruit wine or confiture. It is called "木瓜" (mu gua) in Chinese. |
