The Karo (Pittosporum crassifolium) belongs to the family Pittosporaceae. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. It grows on the coast and grows 1 to 10 m tall. It is now naturalized on Norfolk Island and Hawaii. The trunk is grayish black. The leaves are elliptic to oblong, alternate, entire, and densely covered with grayish-white or brown wooly hairs when young. From August to October, it produces racemes of small dark red flowers at the ends of its branches. The fruit is a capsule, which splits into three pieces to expose the black seeds.
