わが国の固有種で、本州の愛知県・三重県・和歌山県それに四国の太平洋側に分布しています。低山地の岩礫地に生え、高さは5メートルほどになります。葉は倒卵状楕円形で互生し、枝先に集まります。葉縁には、細かい鋸歯があります。5月から6月ごろ、枝先から5〜10センチの総状花序を垂れ下げ、8〜20個の花を咲かせます。花は淡紅色の釣り鐘形で、先は5裂します。
ツツジ科ドウダンツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Enkianthus sikokianus。英名はありません。
"Kainan-sarasa-doudan" (Enkianthus sikokianus) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small decidous tree that is endemic to Japan and distributed to Aichi, Mie and Wakayama Prefecture of Honshu, and the Pacific Ocean Side of Shikoku. This tree grows in low montane screes and can reach about 5 m in height. The leaves are obovate-elliptic, alternate and crowd on the terminal branches. They have fine-toothed margins. The drooping racemes, 5-10 cm long are borne on the terminal branches and produce 8-20 flowers in May to June. The flowers are pale rose-pink and bell-shaped with five-lobate tips.
