The "Kata-inode" (Polystichum makinoi) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from the Kanto region of Honshu westwards to Shikoku, Kyushu and China. It grows in the forests of mountainous areas, and is 50-80 cm tall. The leaves are bipinnate compound, dark yellow-green in color, glossy and somewhat stiff and papery. The leaf stalk is 20-25 cm long. The scales at the base of the leaf stalk are closely packed together and are glossy, reddish brown to blackish brown in color. The sorus is located between the midrib and the margin, and the indisum is round. In Chinese, it is called "黒鱗耳蕨" (hei lin er jue).
