南太平洋のポリネシアが原産です。薄暗い湿った林内に生え、高さは４メートルほどになります。枝は蔓状で、大きなハート形の葉をつけます。この根から抽出した飲み物が、ポリネシアではカバ（アバ・アワ）と呼ばれ、伝統的な儀式や民間薬として使われます。ただ肝障害を引き起こすことも知られていて、ハーブとして利用しないほうがよさそうです。別名で「カバカバ（カワカワ）」とも呼ばれます。

The Kava (Piper methysticum) belongs to Piperaceae (the Pepper family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Polynesia in the South Pacific. This tree grows in a dimly moist forest and up to a height of about 4 m. The branches are vine-shaped and have large heart-shaped leaves. The drink extracted from this root is called "kava" in Polynesia and is used as a traditional ritual and folk medicine. However, it is also known to cause liver damage, so it seems better not to use it as an herb.
