わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島に分布しています。日当たりの良い草原や河原などに生え、高さは３０〜８０センチになります。葉は細い線形で、６〜１０個が輪生します。ただし、本来の葉は２個だけで、あとは托葉が大きくなったものです。７月から８月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から円錐花序をだし、小さな白い花を咲かせます。名前は、河原によく生え、葉が松葉に似ていることから。

アカネ科ヤエムグラ属の多年草で、学名は Galium verum var. asiatica f. nikkoense。英名はありません。

The "Kawara-matsuba" (Galium verum var. asiatica f. nikkoense) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a perennial herb that is native all over Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in sunny grasslands or stream banks, and can reach 30-80 cm in height. The leaves are narrow linear and arranged in 6-10 whorled. The tree leaves are two and others are enlarged stipulars. The panicles are borne on the stem apices and axils, and the small white flowers bloom in July to August.
