わが国の北海道南部から本州、それに朝鮮半島北部から中国東北部の一部とウスリーに分布しています。明るい河原に生え、高さは３～６メートルになります。樹皮は褐灰色で縦に割れます。新枝は淡灰褐色で、灰色の軟毛が密生します。葉は線形で、長さ７～１６センチほど、縁に浅い波状が鋸歯があります。３月から４月ごろ、葉の展開前から同時に花を咲かせます。果実は蒴果で、成熟して裂開します。別名で「ながばかわやなぎ（長葉川柳）」とも呼ばれます。

ヤナギ科ヤナギ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Salix gilgiana。英名はありません。

"Kawa-yanagi" (Salix gilgiana) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a semi-tall decidous tree that is native from southern Hakkaido south to Honshu in Japan, as well as the northern Korean Peninsula, northeastern China and the Ussuri region. This tree grows on sunny riverbeds and it can reach 3-6 m in height. The bark is brownish gray and furrowed longitudially. The new twigs are pale grayish brown and covered thickly with gray soft hairs. The leaves are linear, 7-16 cm long with low wavy toothed edges. The flowers bloom just before or as the foliage emerges from March to April. The fruits are capsules and split open when ripe.
