The "Kazaguruma" (Clematis patens) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu, Shikoku, northern Kyushu in Japan and East Asia. This herb is trailing vine and grows at the edge of forests. The stems are slender and lignified. The leaves are pinnate compound with 3-5 glossy ovate-elliptic leaflets. The white or pale purple flowers bloom at the young branches in early summer. The flower has usually eight petaloid sepals.
