わが国の北海道西南部から本州の北部から中部のおもに日本海側に分布しています。山野に生え、高さは１．５〜２メートルになります。茎は太くて中空、初めは紅紫色の斑点があります。葉は卵形から広卵形で、先端は急に尖り、葉の下端が一直線になります。葉の裏面には毛が密生し、粉白色をしています。雌雄異株です。７月から９月ごろ、葉腋から総状花序を出し、乳白色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。種小名は、標本採集地の山形県（旧羽前国）に因みます。

タデ科イタドリ属の多年草で、学名は Reynoutria japonica var. uzenensis (syn. Fallopia japonica var. uzenensis)。英名は Hairy Japanese knotweed。

The Hairy Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica var. uzenensis) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from southwestern Hokkaido and mainly on the Sea of Japan side of northern to central Honshu. It grows in mountain fields and reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 m. The stems are thick and hollow, with reddish-purple spots at first. The leaves are ovate to broadly ovate, with abruptly pointed tips and straight lower margins. The undersides of the leaves are densely covered with hairs and are powdery white. It is dioecious. From July to September, racemes emerge from the leaf axils and bloom with milky white flowers. The specific epithet refers to Yamagata Prefecture (formerly Uzen Province), where the specimen was collected.
