The "Ke-kitsune-no-botan" (Ranunculus cantoniensis) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, Taiwan, the southern Korean Peninsula and southern China. This herb grows in waste roadsides, rice field linches and can reach 40-60 cm in height. The stem and leaves are covered with erect hairs. The leaves are trifoliate compound and the leaflests are trilobate with acute toothed edges. The small yellow flowers are borne from March to July. The whole plant contains toxic alkaloid. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "禺毛茛", and "禺毛茛" (yu mao gen).
