わが国の本州の太平洋側と四国に分布しています。林下に生育し、桿の高さは１．５〜２メートルになります。桿鞘に長い毛があり、葉の裏面には軟毛が密生します。名前は毛のある「すずたけ（Sasamorpha. borealis）」ということから。「水篶（美篶）刈る信濃（科野）」、ここでの「みすず（水篶）」は、「信濃」にかかる枕詞で、「すずたけ（篶竹）」の異称です。

イネ科スズタケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Sasamorpha mollis。英名はありません。

"Ke-suzu" (Sasamorpha mollis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bamboo that is distributed on the Pacific side of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan. This bamboo grows under the forest and the culms are up to a height of 1.5-2 m. There are long hairs on the culm sheath, and vellus hairs grow densely on the underside of the leaves. The name comes from the hairy "Suzu-take" (Sasamorpha borealis). "Misuzu karu (mowing) Shinano". This term, "mowing the misuzu" was the most common poetic epithet used to refer to Shinano. "Misuzu" is another name for "Suzu-take".
