カバノキ科ハンノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Alnus hirsuta (syn. Alnus hirsuta var. hirsuta)。英名は Manchurian alder。
The Manchurian alder (Alnus hirsuta) belongs to Betulaceae (the Birch family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, Sakhalin, the Kamchatska Peninsula and eastern Siberia. This tree grows in foothills to mountains and can reach 10-20 m in height. The leaves are broad ovate with indented duplicato-serratus edges. They have clear concave veins and covered with soft hairs on the abaxial veins. The flowering clusters are borne in April before foliation. The female clusters are arranged under male clusters. The fruits are elliptic and ripen in blackis brown. It is used for an erosion control planting and an afforestation planting. In Chinese, it is called "遼東榿木" (liao dong qi mu).
