アメリカの南東部に分布しています。湿り気のある落葉樹林内に生え、高さは４０センチほどになります。地下には太い根茎があり、広がります。４月から５月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして黄色い花を咲かせます。花は３弁花で、レモンのような香りがあります。花の下には大きな苞葉がつきます。苞葉は葉に似た外的・内的構造を持ち、光合成を行います。本当の葉は地下にあり、根茎の鱗片のような小さな低出葉をつけます。開花・結実後、夏には休眠します。

The Yellow trillium (Trillium luteum) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the southeastern United States. It grows in moist deciduous forests and is about 40 cm tall. It has thick underground rhizomes that spread. Around April to May, it produces yellow flowers on extended flower stalks. The flowers are three-petaled and have a lemon-like fragrance. The large bracts are attached below the flowers. The bracts have external and internal structures similar to leaves and are photosynthetic. The true leaves are underground, with small cataphylls that look like scales on a rhizome. After flowering and fruiting, it goes dormant in summer.
