ヨーロッパ南部から北アフリカにかけて分布しています。日当たりの良いアルカリ土壌に生え、高さは３０〜４０センチになります。７月から１０月ごろ、小さな白い花を咲かせます。ヨーロッパでは「豆のハーブ」と呼ばれ、快い刺激と深みのある「ペッパー」に似た香りは、ブーケガルニ（香草の束）の材料のひとつにもなっています。

シソ科キダチハッカ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Satureja montana。英名は Winter savory。

Winter savory (Satureja montana) belongs to Labiaceae (the Mint family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to southern Europe and northern Africa. This shrub grows on sunny alkaline soils and can reach 30-40 cm in height. The small white flowers come in July through October. Winter savory has strong peppery flavour, and it is also called 'Bean herb' in Europe. This herb is a content of Bouquet garni.
