The Yellow ox-eye (Buphthalmum salicifolium) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in central to south-central Europe. It grows in light forests, shrublands, and meadows, and is 50-70 cm tall. The stems are reddish purple and erect. The basal leaves are elliptic and petiolate, and the stem leaves are lanceolate and enfold the stem. The yellow flower heads bloom at the top of the stem from May to June. The tips of the ray florets are serrated. It is a cold-tolerant perennial, but in warmer climates it is treated as an annual that can be sown in the fall because of its low heat tolerance.
