The "Kikashi-gusa" (Rotala indica var. uliginosa) belongs to Lythraceae (the Loosestrife family). It is a perennial herb that is native to all over Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and Chiina. This herb grows in rice fields and marshes, and can reach 10-20 cm in height. The stem is coloumnar and tinged reddish. The leaves are obovate-elliptic and alternate. The small pale rose-pink flowers come in the axiles from August to November. There are small 4 petals. The derivation of Japanese name is unknown. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "沼澤節節菜", and "節節菜" (jie jie cai) in Chinese.
