南アフリカが原産です。塊茎は半球状で、コルク質の表面には亀甲状の深い彫りがはいります。夏の間は休眠し、秋から蔓性の茎をだしてハート形の葉をつけます。花は黄白色で「やまのいも」の仲間に似ています。現地の人たちは、この塊茎を食用にするそうです。

ヤマノイモ科ヤマノイモ属の多年草で、学名は Dioscorea elephantipes。英名は Elephant's foot、Hottentot-bread。

The elephant's foot (Dioscorea elephantipes) belongs to Dioscoreaceae (the Yam family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South Africa. The tuber is hemispherical and the surface is covered with suberose testudinal ridges. This herb is dormant in summer. It developes young shoots in fall and come into heart-shaped leaves. The yellowish white flowers look like relative of yam. The natives have been used these tubers for food.
