北アメリカの東部に広く分布しています。わが国でも、各地にわずかに帰化しています。荒れ地や牧草地、道ばたなどに生え、高さは３０〜８０センチになります。葉は円形から卵形で互生し、鋸歯があります。５月から７月ごろ、青色から紫色の花を咲かせます。

キキョウ科キキョウソウ属の一年草で、学名は Specularia perfoliata (syn. Triodanis perfoliata)。英名は Venus's looking-glass。

The Venus's looking-glass (Specularia perfoliata) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is an annual herb that is distributed widely to eastern North America. It is naturalized a few places in Japan. This herb grows in disturbed areas, pastures or roadsides and can reach 30-80 cm in height. The leaves are round to ovate and alternate with toothed edges. The blue to purple flowers come in May to July.
