わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国北部に分布しています。日当たりのよい草地に生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。葉は狭卵形で鋭い鋸歯があり、互生します。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂に青紫色をした鐘形の花を咲かせます。古くは「あさがお」と呼ばれ、山上憶良の歌「朝顔は朝露負ひて咲くといえど夕影にこそ咲き増さりけり」にも登場しています。乾燥した根を桔梗根（ききょうこん）と呼び、お屠蘇の材料や、たん去りの妙薬としても利用されています。中国語では「桔梗（jie geng）」と呼ばれます。

キキョウ科キキョウ属の多年草で、学名は Platycodon grandiflorum (syn. Platycodon grandiflorus)。英名は Baloon flower。

The Baloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorum) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is a perennial herb that is native all over Japan, the Korean Penninsula and northern China. This herb grows in sunny grasslands and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are narrow ovate and alternate with acute toothed edges. The bluish-purple bell shaped flowers come in June through September. This root is used as a herbal medicine for expectorant. The dried roots are called "kikyo-kon" and are used as an ingredient in toso (a traditional Japanese New Year's sake) and as a medicine for coughs. In Chinese, it is called "桔梗" (jie geng).
