南アフリカのケープ地方が原産です。乾燥した地域に生え、高さは１〜２メートルほどになります。一年中、枝先に大きな頭状花序をつけ、小さな花をいっぱい咲かせます。花序を取り囲む総苞は赤く着色します。１９７６年に南アフリカの国花に制定されました。

ヤマモガシ科プロテア属の常緑低木で、学名は Protea cynaroides。英名は King protea。

The King protea (Protea cynaroides) belongs to the family Proteaceae. It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Cape region of South Africa. It grows in dry areas and grows 1-2 m tall. It produces large capitulum at the ends of its branches, which are full of small flowers all year round. The involucre surrounding the inflorescence is red in color. It was established as the national flower of South Africa in 1976.
