アメリカの南西部からメキシコ北西部に分布しています。おもに砂漠の潅木帯や草地に生え、高さは２メートルほどになります。球形のサボテンで、成長に従って円筒形になります。生息地では、このサボテンは赤道に向かって南向きに傾いていることが多く、「コンパス・バレル・カクタス」というニックネームがついています。茎の稜は２０〜２８あり、太く鉤状の棘が密生します。長い４個の中棘と１２〜２０個の縁棘があります。夏から初秋にかけて、茎頂に黄色から赤橙色の花を咲かせます。果実は野生動物の好物です。種小名は、アメリカの医師・植物学者であったフリードリヒ・アドルフ・ヴィスリツェヌスに因みます。

The Fishhook barrel cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a barrel cactus that is distributed from the southwestern United States to northwestern Mexico. It grows mainly in desert shrublands and grasslands, reaching a height of about 2 m. It is a spherical cactus that becomes cylindrical as it grows. In its habitat, this cactus is often tilted southward toward the equator, giving it the nickname "compass barrel cactus". The stem has 20 to 28 ribs and is densely covered with thick, hooked spines. It has 4 long central spines and 12-20 radial spines. Yellow to reddish-orange flowers bloom at the top of the stems from summer to early fall. The fruits are a favorite food of wildlife. The specific epithet is named after Frederick Adolf Wislizenus (1810-1889), an American physician and botanist.
