わが国の本州から四国・九州に分布しています。山地の林縁に生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。茎は直立して４稜があり、葉は卵状披針形または披針形で４輪生します。葉の３脈が目立ちます。７月から９月ごろ、茎の先に円錐状の集散花序をだし、小さな白い花を疎らに咲かせます。和名は、果実の形を砧（きぬた）に見立てたもの。

アカネ科ヤエムグラ属の多年草で、学名は Galium kinuta。英名はありません。

"Kinuta-so" (Galium kinuta) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It grows along the edges of forests in mountainous areas and is 30-60 cm tall. The stem is erect and has four ridges, and the leaves are ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate and quaternate. The three veins of the leaves are conspicuous. From July to September, small white flowers bloom sparsely in conical panicles at the end of the stem. The Japanese name is derived from the shape of the fruit, which resembles a "kinuta" (fulling block - wooden block for beating cloth).
