わが国の各地をはじめ、東アジアからヨーロッパにかけて広く分布しています。山地から亜高山帯の日当たりの良い草地に生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。葉は広披針形で鋸歯があり、互生します。８月から９月ごろ、茎の先に散房花序をだし、鮮やかな黄色い頭花を咲かせます。舌状花はふつう５個あります。和名は、「しおん（紫苑）」に似て黄色い花が咲くことから。台湾華語では「黃菀」、中国語では「林荫千里光（lin yin qian li guang）」と呼ばれます。

The Alpine ragwort (Senecio nemorensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Japan, and widely westward from East Asia to Europe. This herb grows in mountain to sub-alpine sunny grasslands and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are broad lanceolate, serrated and arranged in alternate. The corymbs are borne at the top of stems, and bloom bright yellow flower-heads. The corolla has usually five ray-flowers. The Japanese name comes from the fact that it has yellow flowers similar to those of the "Tatarian aster". In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "黃菀" and "林荫千里光" (lin yin qian li guang).
