熱帯アメリカが原産です。「オランダせんにち（Spilanthes acumella）」の変種です。茎はよく分枝して、高さは３０〜４０センチになります。葉は卵形で浅い鋸歯があり対生します。７月から９月ごろ、管状花だけの卵形の花を咲かせます。葉には「さんしょう（山椒）」のような風味があり、香辛料として利用されます。

キク科オランダセンニチ属の一年草で、学名は Spilanthes oleracea (syn. Spilanthes acumella var. oleracea)。英名は Toothache plant。

The toothache plant (Spilanthes oleracea) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to tropical America. It is a variety of Toothache plant (Spilanthes acumella). The stem is much branched, and can reach 30-40 cm in height. The leaves are ovate with low toothed edges, and arranged in opposite. The ovate flowers bloom from July to September. The collora consists entirely of tubular flowers. Its leaves have Japanese pepper tree like flavor, and used as a spice.
