ユーラシア大陸が原産です。わが国へは、本州中部地方以北から北海道に帰化しています。湿気のある荒廃地や畑、水路の草の多い岸辺などに生え、高さは１０〜６０センチになります。茎は多数分枝して地上に広がります。葉は羽状に深裂し、形には大きな変化があります。４月から７月ごろ、茎頂の総状花序に小さな黄色い花を咲かせます。果実は細い円筒状で１０〜１５ミリ、ほぼ同じ長さの果柄があります。この植物は、切れた根からでも再生が可能で、駆除が困難な雑草です。別名で、「やちいぬがらし（谷地犬芥子）」とも呼ばれます。

The creeping yellow cress (Rorippa sylvestris) belongs to Brassicaceae (the Mustard family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Eurasia. It is also naturalized in Japan; northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido. This herb grows in disturbed wetlands, fields, grassy borders of ditches, and it can reach 10-60 cm in height. The stem is much branched and creeping on the ground. The leaves are deep pinnately and very variable in shape. The small yellow flowers bloom in terminal racemes from April to June. The fruits are narrow columnar 10-15 mm long with isometrical peduncles. This plant can be reproduced itself even from the cut roots, so it is very difficult to exterminate.
