The meadow vetchling (Lathyrus pratensis) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Europe to eastern Siberia. This herb grows in the grasslands of the mountains and can reach 20-60 cm in height. The leaves are oblong and alternate. The racemes are borne at the axils and bloom yellow papilionaceous flowers from May to September. In Japan, it can be seen only on Mt. Ibuki in Shiga Prefecture. Like "Bush vetch" (Vicia sepium), it is believed to be a remnant of Portuguese missionaries who built a herb garden on Mt. Ibuki during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (about 400 years ago).
