わが国の北海道西南部から本州、四国、九州に分布しています。高原に多く、高さは１〜２メートルになります。葉は倒披針形で互生し、縁には細毛があります。４月から６月ごろ、枝先の総状花序に、鮮やかな黄色い漏斗形の花を咲かせます。雄しべは５個です。「れんげつつじ（蓮華躑躅）」の一品種です。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rhododendron japonicum f. flavum。英名は Yellow Japanese azalea。

The Yellow Japanese azalea (Rhododendron japonicum f. flavum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from southwestern Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in Japan. This tree is often found on plateaus and can reach 1-2 meters in height. The leaves are oblanceolate and alternate, with fine hairs on the edges. The bright yellow funnel-shaped flowers bloom on the racemes at the tips of the branches from April to June. There are 5 stamens. It is a form of "Japanese azalea".
