"Kibana-shakunage" (Rhododendron aureum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native from Chubu district north to Tohoku district Honshu and Hokkaido, as well as the Korean Peninsula, Mongolia, and Eastern Siberia. This tree grows in alpine gravels, grasslands and creeping pine zone, and can reach 10-30 cm in height. The leaves are ovate and cortex, with the edges wrapping around the back. The several pale yellow flowers come on the tips of the branches from June to July. There are many brown spots on the base of the corolla.
