わが国の本州、岡山・島根県以西および四国・九州に分布しています。「もちつつじ」の近縁です。大きな河川の中流から上流部の岩場に生え、高さは１〜１．５メートルになります。葉は長い楕円形で、両面には褐色の伏毛があります。４月から５月ごろ、紅紫色の花を咲かせます。萼片には腺毛が多く、粘ります。雄しべは１０個あります。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の半落葉低木で、学名は Rhododendron ripense。英名はありません。

"Kishi-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron ripense) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small semi-evergreen tree that is closely related to "Mochi-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron macrosepalum). It is distributed from Okayama-Shimane Prefecture of Honshu west to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in rocky places of the middle to upper reaches of large river, and can reach 1-1.5 m in height. The leaves are oblong and covered with brown appressed hairs. The magent flowers bloom from April to May. The calyxes are sticky by the many glandular hairs. The corolla has ten stamens.
