The "Kitsune-azami" (Hemistepta lyrata) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial herb that is distributed westward from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, India and Australia. This herb grows in roadsides or openings and can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are soft and divided into pinnate lobes. They are spinless and covered with white hairs on the abaxial sides. It blooms upright magenta flower-heads from May to June. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "泥胡菜" and "泥胡菜" (ni hu cai) in Chinese.
