The Yellow Japanese weigela (Weigela maximowiczii) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed to north and central Honshu in Japan. This tree grows in wet forest edges of mountains, and it can reach about 2-3 m in height. The leaves are ovate-elliptic, opposite, with an acute tip and serrated edges. The both surfaces of leaf are sparsely hairy. The pale yellow, funnel-shaped flowers bloom at the upper axils from April to May. The lower lobes of the corolla have orange patches. The fruit is a cylindrical, slightly curved capsule, 1.5-2.5 cm long.
