"Kiyosumi-ito-goke" (Barbella flagellifera) belongs to the family Meteoriaceae. It is an evergreen moss that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, China, and the Indochina Peninsula. It grows along streams in mountainous areas and hangs from branches in semi-shady areas. The stems crawl along the surface of the branches and branch irregularly, reaching 10 to 20 cm in length. The leaves at the base of the stem are 2 to 2.5 mm long, elliptic, and have inconspicuous serrations at the tip. The drooping leaves are bright green with narrow, thread-like tips. There are male and female plants, and in rare cases, a cylindrical capsule (moss sporangium) about 3 mm long is attached to the base of the stem. The Japanese name comes from its abundance in Mt. Kiyosumi in Chiba Prefecture.
