The hedgehog bush (Gmelina hystrix) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to India and the Philippine Islands. It is a climbing tropical flowering tree and its branches are drooping. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate to oblong. The long descending racemes are borne and the yellow flowers bloom in the green to reddish-brown bracts from spring to fall. The Japanese name is derived from the "瓔珞" (youraku); Buddhist equipment (originally refer to a bodily accessory, such as a necklace, crown, or bracelet made of gems and precious metals knit with string, displayed on the head, neck, and chest, usually worn by the nobility in ancient India.)
