The Macedonian scabious (Knautia macedonica) belongs to Dipsacaceae (the Teasel family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in southeastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. It grows in open forests and shrublands, reaching a height of about 75 cm. The leaves are dark green, with those lower on the stem pinnately lobed. Cauline leaves are smaller and mostly unlobed. The leaf margins are rounded-toothed or crenate. From May to September, it extends slender scapes, producing dome-shaped capitula densely packed with small, dark crimson flowers. The fruit is a small, blackish achene.
