わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。山野や道ばたに生え、茎の下部が木化して高さは1〜2メートルになります。葉は菱状卵形から楕円形で、先は尾状にとがり、縁には鋸歯があります。「くさこあかそ」に似ていますが、この鋸歯が片側で8個以下なのが特徴です。8月から10月ごろ、長い花序をだします。
イラクサ科カラムシ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Boehmeria spicata。英名はありません。
"Ko-akaso" (Boehmeria spicata) belongs to Urticaceae (the Nettle family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This shrub grows in fields, mountains and roadsides, and can reach 1-2 m in height. The lower parts of stems are lignify. The leaves are diamond-ovate to elliptic with cuneatic tips and serrated edges. It is difined by having less than eight saw teeth on one side.
