The "Kobano-amami-fuyu-ichigo" (Rubus amamianus var. minor) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is an evergreen shrub that is an endemic species found on Amami Oshima in Japan's Amami Islands. It grows along the mountain streams of the Sumiyo River and reaches a height of 20 to 30 cm. Its stems creep over moss-covered rocks. The leaves are circular-heart-shaped and alternate; they are even smaller than those of the "Amami-fuyu-ichigo", measuring 2 to 3 cm in diameter, shallowly three-lobed, and with blunt serrations along the margins. From around May to July, it produces white flowers in the upper leaf axils. The flowers have five petals, and the fruits that form after flowering ripen to a red color from around August to September. It is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
