The big quakinggrass (Briza maxima) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual grass that is native to Europe. Nowadays, it is naturalized worldwidely in the temperate areas. This grass was introduced into Japan in Meiji Era (about 120 years ago) as an ornamental plant, and naturalized southward from Chubu-district of Honshu. This grass grows in roadsides, dry fields or barrens and can reach 10-60 cm in height. The stem is slender, and the leaves are linear to linear-lanceolate. The panicles are borne on the shoot apices in summer. The spikelets are large ovate to elliptic and arranged at the end of cluster-branches.
