わが国の各地をはじめ、千島列島やサハリン、朝鮮半島、シベリアに分布しています。日当たりの良い草地に生え、高さは２０〜５０センチになります。根生葉は線形、茎葉は披針形です。４月から６月ごろ、円錐花序に黄褐色の小穂をだします。乾燥するとクマリンの香気があります。

イネ科コウボウ属の多年草で、学名は Hierochloe odorata var. pubescens。英名は Sweet grass。

The sweet grass (Hierochloe odorata var. pubescens) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to all over Japan, as well as the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula and Siberia. This herb grows in sunny grasslands and can reach 20-50 cm in height. The basal leaves are linear and the cauline leaves are lanceolate. The yellowish brown spikelets are borne in the panicles from April to June. The dried plants have a flavor of coumarin odor.
