The "Kobu-gashi" (Machilus kobu) belongs to Lauraceae (the Laurel family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is an endemic species of Japan's Ogasawara Islands. It grows in a wide range of habitats from coastal areas to mountainous regions, reaching heights of 7 to 10 m. The leaves are oblong to obovate, entire-margined, and alternate. New leaves have an iron-rust color and emerge two to three times a year, around February to May and in fall. Around March, several panicles emerge from leaf axils near the branch tips, bearing small, pale yellow-green flowers. The fruit is a spherical berry that ripens to a blackish-purple color. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the nodes on the twigs swell and appear knob-like.
