南アジアのバングラデシュ、ブータンそれにインドが原産地だと考えられています。茎は直立し、高さは２〜３メートルになります。葉は鮮やかな緑色で、線状披針形から長楕円形、らせん形につきます。夏から秋にかけて、茎頂に総状花序をつけます。花は蝶形で、濃い黄色です。主として靱皮繊維の生産のために栽培されますが、緑肥や雑草の防除、有害線虫の密度抑制にも利用されます。

マメ科クロタラリア属の一年草で、学名は Crotalaria juncea。英名は Sunn-hemp。

The sunn-hemp (Crotalaria juncea) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an annual herb that is considered native to South Asia; Bangladesh, Bhutan and India. This herb is erect and can reach 2-3 m in height. The leaves are bright green in color, linear elliptic to oblong and spirally arranged on the stem. The racemes are borne on the terminal stems from summer to fall. The flowers are deep yellow and papilionacenous. It is primarily grown for production of bast fibers and also used as a green manure, and as a break crop to reduce weed and nematode populations.
