The Mother of thousands (Kalanchoe daigremontiana) belongs to Crassulaceae (the Orpine family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to southwestern Madagascar. It grows in rocky and dry mountainous areas and grows to about 1 m tall. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, opposite or whorled, and fleshy. The upper part of the leaf is green with purple spots on the lower part. Sporadically, compound umbels are produced at the top of the stem, producing small, grayish-pink, bell-shaped flowers. It reproduces not only from seeds, but also by plantlets that develop at the leaf margins and by shoots from lateral roots. The plant body contains a very toxic steroid known as daigremontianin.
