The "Kogome-yanagi" (Salix serissifolia) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a tall deciduous that is endemic of Japan, and distributed northward from Kinki district to southern Tohoku district of Honshu. This tree grows on sand gravel areas and can reach 10-25 m in height. The barks are dark grayish-brown and longitudinally fissuered. The leaves are linear and alternate with shallow toothed edges. The reverse side of leaves are glabrous and powdery white. It is dioecious. The flowers come in April as soon as foliation. The fruits are capsules, split open and scatter many willow catkins.
