The Chickweed (Stellaria media) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a biennial herb that is distributed worldwide, throughout Japan and from the frozen latitudes to the tropical latitudes. This herb was introduced into Japan with the oats in ancient days. The stem is green with hairs in a row and often tinged dark purple. The leaves are ovate-round to ovate, petiolate at the bases and sessile at the upper parts. The cymes are borne on the termial stems and bloom small white flowers from March to September. It has five petals which divided into two lobes and three styles. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "繁縷", and in Chinese, "繁縷" (fan lu).
