It grows in mountainous grasslands, rocky areas, and volcanic bare ground, reaching a height of 15 to 30 cm. The stems grow in clumps, and the rhizomes grow obliquely upward. The leaves are linear, 1.5 to 3 mm wide. From around May to June, spikelets appear at the stem tips. The terminal spikelet is male, golden-brown, and club-shaped.
