わが国の本州から四国・九州それに朝鮮半島や中国東北部、シベリアなどに分布しています。日当たりの良い草地や湿地に生え、根元でよく分枝して高さは５〜１０センチになります。根生葉は卵状菱形でロゼット状につきます。３月から５月ごろ、茎頂に小さな淡青紫色の花を咲かせます。名前は「りんどう（竜胆）」に比べて大きさが苔のように小さいことから。

リンドウ科リンドウ属の多年草で、学名は Gentiana squarrosa。英名はありません。

"Koke-rindou" (Gentiana squarrosa) belongs to Gentianaceae (the Gentian family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, and The small pale bluish-purple flowers come on the shoot apex from March to May. The Japanese name is due to the fact that the size is as small as moss compared to "Rindou" (Gentiana scabra var. buergeri).
