The Siberian barren strawberry (Waldsteinia ternata) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Mt. Hyonosen in Hyogo Prefecture north to Tohoku and Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, Sakhalin, and eastern Siberia. It grows in forests and along mountain streams in mountainous areas and grows 10-15 cm tall. Rhizomes crawl underground. The basal leaves are trifoliate and bunchy, and the lateral leaflets have two additional deep lobes. The cauline leaves are small lanceolate to ovate with three lobes. Yellow flowers bloom on scapes from May to June. It is called "林石草" (lin shi cao) in Chinese.
